The Supreme Court - New Justice Selection
President Obama is now considering who to nominate for the soon-to-be vacant seat of Supreme Court Justice David Souter. The President has stated publicly that the foremost quality he wants the new Justice to have is "EMPATHY". I'm curious, I wonder what percentage of the public can accurately define what the word "empathy" really means?
Because this trait will supposedly be used by the new Justice to decide cases important to us all, I for one believe we should all know exactly what it means. Since it's application will affect the judgement of the new Justice and that judgement will ultimately affect all of us, as citizens of this nation.
Below IS the definition of empathy:
EMPATHY; as defined by Merriam-Webster's dictionary:
em·pa·thy
Pronunciation:\ˈem-pə-thē\
Function:noun
Etymology:Greek empatheia, literally, passion, from empathēs emotional, from em- + pathos feelings, emotion.
Date:1850
1: the imaginative projection of a subjective state into an object so that the object appears to be infused with it.
2: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.
Therefore I sincerely hope when the US Congress considers the nominee's "empathy" they will also consider it through the filter of another word.
That word is:
scrupulous • \SKROO-pyuh-lus\ • adjective
1 : having moral integrity : acting in strict regard for what is considered right or proper.
*2 : punctiliously exact : painstaking
Synonyms: ethical, honest, honorable, just, moral, principled,
Did you know?
When the adjective "scrupulous" entered the language in the 15th century, it meant "principled." Now it also commonly means "painstaking" or "careful".
It is the duty of the Congress to either confirm the nominee or not by a majority of the vote. I hope they are "SCRUPULOUS" in their examination of all nominees. I for one want a justice who interprets the United States Constitution and other laws passed by congress and signed by the President as it they are written. Not an activist who makes new law from the bench based on their personal feelings.
How do you feel about it?
May Peace Be With You Brothers and Sisters.
